LINDA BRODAY’S TOP TEN LIST OF FAVORITE TEXAS PLACES

I’ve traveled over a good portion of Texas and have seen places that deeply touched me, and they’re places I want to visit again and again. Here are ten of my top favorites.

1. The Alamo – this is such a piece of hallowed ground, and I felt the spirits of the roughly 200 men who gave their lives here for Texas independence. I get very emotional each time I visit.

2. The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum – I love each trip I make here. So much history. If you haven’t been, you need to go.

3. Bolivar Peninsula – It’s here where Jane Long, the twenty-three-year-old wife of James Long, wintered in a tent and gave birth to another child in 1821 with only her young slave and six-year-old daughter. I recently stood on the bank and tried to imagine having little food and trying to survive. She was named Mother of Texas and still carries this distinction today.

4. Fort Concho – I always love visiting this fort in San Angelo. It’s been restored and easy to imagine it being home to soldiers from 1867-1889. This was one of a line of forts established to protect the settlers.

5. Mobeetie – This town is the oldest in the Texas Panhandle (est. 1874) and Charles Goodnight called it the roughest place he’d ever seen. Bat Masterson was wounded here in a shootout.

6. Tascosa – Settled in 1876, this was one of only three towns in the Texas Panhandle and drew outlaws and gunfighters by the droves, including Billy the Kid and Charles Siringo.

7. Menard’s Pioneer Rest Cemetery – I get some of my best stories in cemeteries. A large amount of Texas Rangers are buried here, and I get a lump in my throat seeing their graves.

8. Fort Griffin – This was in the line of forts established to protect the settlers in 1867 and became one of the wildest places in the Old West. Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Lottie Deno, and gunfighter John Wesley Hardin spent time here.

9. The Stockyards in Fort Worth – So much history here that began in 1866, and it’s located mere blocks from the area known as Hell’s Half Acre.

10. Panhandle Plains Museum – Located on the West Texas A&M campus in Canyon, Texas, this is cram-packed with everything historical, including an old west town that takes up one floor.

PRAISE FOR SAVING THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE:

“Broday continues her Outlaw Mail Order Brides historical Western romance series with an interesting premise…” — Kirkus

“The adventure and dangers kept the pages turning – delivering quite a few surprises and heart-pounding moments. And generously balanced in were moments of peace and beauty.” — Sunshine Lake Reviews

“I loved every deep ravine-gun blazing-twist of this book.”

— Glenda (Goodreads reviewer)

“Linda Broday has spun another great adventure that is full of surprises, has you rooting for the outlaws and people of Hope’s Crossing, and wanting some ‘lawmen,’ ‘businessmen,’ and other ‘questionable men’ to find their deaths. It’ll make you question who should be called an outlaw in this period of time.”
— Stephanie (Goodreads reviewer)

I’m a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over twenty historical western romance novels and short stories. I reside in the Texas Panhandle on land the American Indian and Comancheros once roamed, and at times if the breeze is just right, I can hear their voices whispering in the wind. Texas’ rich history is one reason I set all my stories here where cowboys are still caretakers of the land. I’m inspired every day by their immense dedication and love for the wide open spaces. When I’m not writing, I collect old coins and I’ve also been accused (quite unfairly I might add) of making a nuisance of myself at museums, libraries, and historical places. I’m also a movie buff and love sitting in a dark theater, watching the magic unfold on the screen. As long as I’m confessing…chocolate is my best friend. It just soothes my soul.

  1. Hi Jenn, thank you so much for hosting me and listing my top ten Texas locations. The historical ones are my favorites. I'm so excited about my new book and I can't wait for readers to pick it up. This is the most humorous one I've ever written. Jack and Nora kept me giggling and at times I had to stop and just laugh a while. Nora really frustrated Jack to no end. She wouldn't let him get by with anything, most of all his habit of counting when he needed to cool down. I think readers will love the story. My next release is in September, a novella in Longing for a Cowboy Christmas. The story is about saloon girl Rebel Avery and her outlaw Travis Lassiter. Then Book #3 – The Mail Order Bride's Secret – will release in January with outlaw Tait Trinity. So I have lots ahead. Thanks again for having me.

  2. It would be fun to visit some or all of those places with you. All your research and interest of history shows in your writing. And I can't wait to read your next couple of books.

  3. I’ve been to a few of those places. I love visiting Longhorn Caverns in the Hill country, Luchenbach, FORT DAVIS, & Fort Stockton. Texas has so many great things to offer anyone.
