I received a copy of this book for free. This is my honest and thoughtful review.
I have always been fascinated by medical memoirs, so when the opportunity presented itself to go behind-the-scenes of a plastic surgeon’s life, I wanted to know more!
This is an entertaining look into the world of cosmetic surgery that navigates readers in all aspects of the surgical process. Moving from the often dramatic dynamics of the office culture to his passion for his practice, he details the process from initial patient consultation to maintaining that relationship of trust in a year’s worth of follow-ups to observe these life-changing transformations. His talent was truly spotlighted in a chapter featuring the success stories of three patients who each underwent differing procedures. Their confidence and happiness radiated off the page, making them by far the best marketing tool he can offer regardless of the other strategies he may utilize.
While it’s certainly easy for the pages to fly given much of the outlandishness of it all, the moments of insight about setting expectations and communicating with patients were incredibly interesting. While many seek surgery for positive reasons with the benefit of an encouraging support network, there are many others who may exhibit mental illness or experience excessive pressure from a partner, and even some who may simply need positive affirmation that their bodies are fine. I would have enjoyed reading more about the reconstructive help he has provided rather than the few mentions that seemed to be glossed over.
Though his writing style is overly colloquial for my taste, many readers will appreciate this conversational tone. Personal preference aside, I can definitely appreciate how his use of language works to spotlight his sense of humor and truly opens up a conversation into a line of work that people aren’t always so keen to discuss. His eccentricity and bravado give him an endearing quality that no doubt keep the patients seeking his services, and often, coming back for more!
Credentials: Dr. Thomas Jeneby is a board-certified plastic surgeon in San Antonio, Texas. He has been in practice since 2002 and has held the position as President of the San Antonio Society of Plastic Surgeons since 2016. In recognition of his performance as one of the most competent cosmetic surgeons in San Antonio, Dr. Jeneby was honored by being appointed a Diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 2003. He currently holds state medical board licenses in Texas, Arkansas, California, Pennsylvania, and Florida. He obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia (Virginia Commonwealth University) in Richmond, Virginia.
Enough with the formalities, Dr. Jeneby is an eccentric, joke-telling, long-haired, outspoken, attention-grabbing clothes- and cowboy boot-wearing, son of Turkish immigrants. He does many of his cosmetic surgeries live on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, with very small pieces of tape covering up anything that would make the videos “inappropriate.” He curses, he jokes, and he’s a hell of a surgeon.
AND he has a compassionate heart. Each month, Dr. Jeneby donates funding and surgical expertise to the Family Violence Prevention Services, Inc. in San Antonio, in the form of free reconstructive surgery to battered women, and to The Wounded Warrior Project to help injured and disfigured soldiers. A portion of the proceeds from his book will go toward these charities.
Dr. Jeneby has been featured in Newsweek, Cosmopolitan, S.A. Scene in the “Best Plastic Surgeons” issue, as well as multiple appearances on local and national shows such as Inside Edition.
