Bestselling and award-winning author DiAnn Mills delivers a heart-stopping story of a faulty construction job, the discovery of a dead body, and a sinister plot.

On the family’s Brazos River Ranch in Texas, Avery Elliott helps run her grandfather’s commercial construction business. Raised by Senator Elliott, Avery has never doubted her grandfather is the man of integrity and faith she’s always believed him to be …. until the day she finds him standing with a gun over the body of a dead man. To make matters worse, Avery’ just discovered a billing discrepancy for materials supposedly purchased for construction of the Lago de Cobre Dam.

Desperate for answers, Avery contacts FBI Special Agent Marc Wilkins for help. As Marc works to identify the dead man Avery saw, threats toward Avery create a fresh sense of urgency to pinpoint why someone wants to silence her. With a hurricane approaching the Texas coast and the structural integrity of the Lago de Cobre Dam called into question, time is running out to get to the bottom of a sinister plot that could be endangering the lives of not only Avery and her loved ones but the entire community.

Tensely woven from the opening sequence, the story was incredibly fast-paced and set a desperate tone to find answers, and with a hurricane a’comin’, the rush is on!

Told from multiple third person perspectives, readers are given both an emotional and informative play by play into the drama and investigation. Avery is desperate to find out whether her grandfather’s past political scheming has come home to roost and threaten their joint commercial development ventures. Marc is thrust into tracking down a murderer, while trying to balance the dynamics of discovering a new found family. And as a massively destructive hurricane makes it’s way to Galveston, the race is on to compile the evidence to prove a man innocent, while hopefully stopping further death and damage from a faulty dam.

Despite their tough exteriors, both are incredibly complex and fragile individuals, yet it is with their individual weaknesses that their strengths can shine as they work together. The attraction is immediate and apparent; however, each carries quite a bit of baggage, making them reluctant to get too close. The romantic feelings that develop between them never seemed rushed or unrealistic. It is ultimately through their shared connection to faith that inspires them to support each other through their own personal tribulations in an effort to build a future relationship. But these aren’t the ordinary circumstances they would find themselves in, and as everything begins to unfold, it becomes harder and harder to deny the feelings developing between them. I really appreciate how the author is able to intersperse the light romance aspects throughout the story while always keeping it as an element in the background to maintain the importance of professionalism.

Action-packed with very little down time, short chapters keep the tension mounting and the pages flying! This is certainly a story filled with lots of heart and soul. A well written plot that was fascinating to read and continues to keep me coming back for more of her books!

5 stars.
