Top 5 Wednesday: Favorite Underrated Books

Greetings Fellow Book Dragons!

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme within the book community that was created by Lainey of GingerReadsLainey, but is now hosted by Sam of Thoughts on Tomes.  If you’re interested in participating, find out more on the Goodreads group.

This week’s topic is Favorite Underrated Books!  These are the books that aren’t widely talked about.  Those books that are considered hidden gems.  These can also be those books that maybe used to be popular, but people have forgotten about them and you know they still deserve all the love.

Here are my selections in no particular order:

This book is suspense at its best!  It takes place in an apocalyptic near-future where something terrifying lurks outside, but one glimpse of whatever it is drives a person to deadly violence.  No one knows what it is or where it came from.  Five years after its onset, the story follows Malorie, her children, and a motley band of survivors as they try to confront the ultimate question:  In a world gone mad, who can be trusted?  Your imagination will thank you for picking this one up!

This is the first book in series that follows a CSI expert tracking down a serial killer seeking to upset society’s norms in the most disturbing ways possible.  Read the first chapter and you’ll be hooked!

This book is a return to the classics of Hitchcock and Highsmith and is another example of great suspense and tension!
While on a layover one night, Ted meets the stunning, yet mysterious Lily, and as they share one too many martinis, they begin playing a game of truth.  Ted reveals that his marriage is becoming stale and he is convinced that his wife, Miranda, is having an affair.  Their game takes a darker turn when he states that he could kill his wife for what she has done.  Without missing a beat, Lily states that she wants to help.  Their bond becomes stronger as they plot Miranda’s demise; however, unbeknownst to Ted, Lily has honed her craft for murder through experiences that go as far back as her childhood.  These co-conspirators quickly find themselves embroiled in a yet another game, a chilling cat-or-mouse chase that both cannot survive with a very determined detective on their tail.

This is a very atmospheric read where the landscape becomes as much a character in the story as the actual characters.  Lucy’s mother disappeared when she was very young, but people still whisper about her mesmerizing and mysterious presence.  Now on the brink of adulthood, Lucy faces another devastating loss when her friend Cheri disappears, but is later found murdered, her body found disturbingly staged for all to see.  As Lucy sets out to discover the truth behind her friend’s murder, she uncovers a secret that pervades the secluded and bucolic town set deep in the Ozark Mountains.  This debut is masterfully written and explores the meaning of family, the secrets we keep, and the lengths we go to to protect those we love.

Devon is a straight A student-athlete with everything going for her.  But in a moment of denial, desperation, and sheer panic, she did something that no one could ever imagine.  Now she is being charged with attempted murder and her life will never be the same.  This book is a skillfully crafted story that presents a truly empathetic character caught up in an unimaginable situation.

So those are the books that I consider my favorite underrated reads!  Do you have any?  Please share in the comments because I love adding to my TBR pile!
